Job title: Senior Business Analyst – Physical Trading / NEM

A market-leading energy business is looking for a Senior Business Analyst with genuine Physical Trading Markets experience to partner with their Physical Markets Trading team on a high-impact body of work.

This is not a generalist BA role. You’ll be working shoulder-to-shoulder with physical markets traders, so you need to genuinely understand what a day in the life of a physical markets trader looks like, how decisions get made on the desk, and the data and tooling they rely on to operate.

What you’ll bring

You’ll have deep, hands-on knowledge of the National Electricity Market (NEM): how the marketplace actually works, dispatch, settlement, bidding, and the rhythms of the trading day. You’ll have worked on AER physical trading-related initiatives and understand the regulatory backdrop traders operate within.

You’ll bring strong exposure to high-end energy markets and the commercial dynamics that drive them. Critically, you’ll have worked on battery integrations, whether that’s retail batteries (VPP, behind-the-meter) or large-scale grid batteries, and you’ll understand state of charge, why it matters commercially and operationally, and how it feeds into trading decisions and market participation.

Day-to-day you’ll be:

  • Eliciting requirements directly from physical markets traders and translating trading workflows into clear, actionable specifications
  • Mapping current and future state processes across trading, dispatch, and battery operations
  • Producing functional and non-functional requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria
  • Working closely with engineering, data, and product teams to shape solutions
  • Facilitating workshops with technical and commercial stakeholders
  • Supporting testing, UAT coordination, and go-live activities
  • Documenting trading logic, market interfaces, and integration points with downstream systems

About you

  • Proven Senior BA experience delivering in physical trading / energy markets environments
  • Deep working knowledge of the NEM
  • AER physical trading experience
  • Battery integration experience (utility-scale)
  • Strong understanding of state of charge and its commercial significance
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced trading environment alongside commercially sharp stakeholders
  • Excellent stakeholder management, workshop facilitation, and documentation skills
  • Australian working rights essential

The offer
Rate up to $1100/day + GST.
Long contract with a respected energy player, working on genuinely interesting market and battery integration work.
